During his phone conversation with Bernie, after Nino drowns, the Driver references the story “The Scorpion and the Toad.” In the story, the toad carries the scorpion across the river; the scorpion stings the toad, and both drown. When asked by the toad why sting it, when both would drown, the scorpion replied, “It’s my nature.” The back of the Driver’s coat shows a yellow scorpion, implying that he is the scorpion in the story.Drive (2011)
